AppClarity savings in 30 days

About every other day, the movie Something About Mary, staring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz, can be found on one of the 400 channels on cable. A great scene in the movie occurs when Stiller’s character Ted decides to pick up a hitchhiker who is excited about a fledgling business plan:
Hitchhiker: You heard of this thing, the 8-Minute Abs?
Ted: Yeah, sure, 8-Minute Abs. Yeah, the exercise video.
Hitchhiker: Yeah, this is going to blow that right out of the water. Listen to this: 7… Minute… Abs.
Ted: Right. Yes. OK, all right. I see where you’re going.
Hitchhiker: Think about it. You walk into a video store, you see 8-Minute Abs sittin’ there, there’s 7-Minute Abs right beside it. Which one are you gonna pick, man?
Ted: I would go for the 7.
Hitchhiker: Bingo, man, bingo
The Hitchhiker is on the right track, actually. The ability to do more in less time is always a business aspiration, particularly when considering spending and cutting cost.
Here’s a question for the hitchhiker: Is there a 7 minute abs of IT efficiency that can deliver huge cost savings in a short amount of time?
Turns out there is! AppClarity from 1E is the most effective, easiest, and FASTEST way to burn the fat of software licenses waste and firm up those flabby license processes, resulting in savings in the tens of thousands, even millions of dollars.
We all know the standard way of software auditing: pull together a team of FTEs to spend huge amounts of time gathering a massive Excel document of licenses believed to be in the field, months of interrogating users on what applications they can part ways with, manually applying license information to each software product and version only to find that Adobe X and Adobe 10 have been double counted, and finally blindly uninstalling software hoping users in Asia won’t call in the middle of the night complaining their business critical applications have mysteriously disappeared.
The alternative is AppClarity; it does it all in less time. But how long does it take for this AppClarity IT cost-weight-loss to take place? 7 minutes like our hitchhiker friend said? Not quite, but very close! Try only 30 days. In a just a few weeks, AppClarity can be fully implemented to report on software usage and automatically reclaim excess software fat. Here’s the AppClarity workout routine:
Days 1 – 3, Discover: The 1E Professional Services consultants, using the 1E project delivery methodology SuccessNow, begin each client and product engagement by understanding the specific customer environment. Since AppClarity touches many business process components, the discovery is more than just reviewing customer documentation and configuring hardware. Real discovery involves interviewing various customer teams as well as executive management to shape the total solution. Just like a personal trainer pushes gym-goers, 1E consultants push the customer teams to think big and envision how their current business process can be updated, centralized, and streamlined as a result of AppClarity.
Days 3 – 5, Design: 1E will conduct design and planning sessions to discuss the components, requirements, and operational activities associated with AppClarity. Among other things, 1E will help to allocate servers, review security requirements, identify key stakeholders, define communication plans, and help to prepare for change control processes. At the conclusion of this design work, 1E consultants deliver clear and comprehensive documentation that is used as a great reference for customer teams.
Day 6 (1 hour!), Installation & Sync: The installation of AppClarity follows the discovery phase and is performed by the 1E consultant and customer team members. Once AppClarity is installed, the initial sync with the ConfigMgr database takes place. This is strictly a PULL from SCCM, easing concerns of many a DBA and allowing AppClarity to avoid lengthy change control procedures to get up and running faster. This begins the knowledge transfer that is key throughout the project, ensuring the customer attain a high level of confidence working with AppClarity.
Day 7, Unused Software Reporting: In less than two weeks, AppClarity is already trimming weight. With the SCCM data now in AppClarity, the product uses its sophisticated heuristic logic to group software products, as well as software versions, into product families in order to provide like comparisons. This kind of powerful logic will make sure typos or unusual wording doesn’t hinder true software saving metrics. The Unused Software Report shows licenses on user computers that are not currently in use and could therefore be removed in order to save cost. Imagine being the one to deliver this report to the CIO after only one week, showing thousands of dollars in license cost just waiting to be cut. After becoming your new best friend, the CIO’s next question is, “How do we make this happen?”
Day 8 – 16, Reclaim Design: Now that the stakeholders have a better understanding of AppClarity, it’s a good time to re-engage the license management team since we are going to begin defining the most powerful function of AppClarity, automatic software reclaiming. Rather than needing to address each software license on each single computer, you can automatically uninstall applications on any work station based on rules or criteria specific to organizational requirements.
Day 17 – 25, Licenses: Now it’s time to connect AppClarity to a source for application license cost. AppClarity can import license information from a variety of data sources. Once company and product specific license information is loaded to AppClarity, very detailed savings estimates can be generated, as well as actual savings over time as the reclaiming continues.
Day 25 – 30, Business Process: With the active work completed, it’s time to cool down and integrate AppClarity into current business processes. After reviewing with key stakeholders to present initial findings, 1E consultants will determine how to integrate software reclaim process with the existing procurement process. The procurement process needs to check for available (reclaimed) licenses before purchasing more and determining the process for the import of new licenses into AppClarity as they are purchased. As always, it’s critical to communicate to the user community what will happen, and to excite them that they will be an integral part of saving company dollars, allowing for more exciting projects to receive well deserved funding!
After 30 days, AppClarity is now ready to automatically reclaim unused software and is integrated in the company culture, making the software fat in your organization a distant memory. Just in time for beach season!
