New whitepaper: How to claim your energy rebate from your utility provider when implementing a PC Power Management solution

In a recent post, we talked about an article on GreenBiz.com that talks to how you can obtain energy rebates from your utility provider.  The article does a great job in informing you about the rebates, but we decided it would be useful to take it a step further.  In a new whitepaper, we cut through the tedium and time of having to figure out exactly how to obtain the rebates.

Utility providers will partially or fully fund the costs of a PC power management project

Nick Milne-Home, the president of 1E in North America, has a great piece posted today on the GreenBiz.com web site.  I think this is truly interesting because he walks through the opportunities and incentives that are available for companies planning a PC Power Management project, or a server reduction program.  These incentives play perfectly alongside our solutions, NightWatchman SE and NightWatchman Server Edition, but there is a time consideration.  You must hurry to take advantage.

Utility incentive programs fund anything from 25 percent to 70 percent of qualifying efficiency projects or offer cash rebates for customers who install new, energy efficient IT equipment or cooling systems.

So how did they perform? Our customers and the CRC League Table

Here at 1E, we’ve been looking at the newly published 2010-2011 CRC Performance League Table.

We wanted to see how organizations are getting on with CRC reporting, but more importantly, with reducing their carbon footprints.

We’re pleased to say that we work with 93 of the top 500 organizations in the Performance League Table (PLT) – that’s a respectable 19%. Almost half (47%) of that number use our flagship PC power management solution, NightWatchman Enterprise including (in order of CRC performance):

· John Lewis Partnership; (2029) Department of Culture, Media & Sport (2018); AT&T (1939); Newham University Hospitals NHS Trust (1922); Wolverhampton Council (1517) in the top 200.

· Oxfordshire County Council (1882); The Department of Work and Pensions (1879); Centrica (1875); Lend Lease (1676); Oxford City Council (1852); The Environment Agency (1827.5); Nomura (1803); EDF Energy (1774); HSBC (1736); Department of Education (1676.5); and SJ Berwin (1676.5) in the top 400.

Of those 16, five are in the top 200 these are John Lewis Partnership (2029); Department of Culture, Media & Sport (2018); AT&T (1939); Newham University Hospitals NHS Trust (1922); Wolverhampton Council (1517). *The scores in brackets denote overall CRC weighted score and the higher the score the better.

Of all of these, we’re proud of all of our customer’s achievements but we’d like to call out Newham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The hospital came in 11th out of 150 hospitals and so ended up in the top 7% overall. Its efforts to be greener, more efficient and work smarter with the IT that it uses have seen it win a number of awards including ‘Greenest Hospital’ at the Healthcare, Excellence and Leadership (HEAL) 2010 and a runner up nomination at this year’s Green IT awards. Well done Shaun!

*Weighted Score – The sum of, the score for each metric multiplied by the weighting for that metric. The weighting applied to each metric is dependent on the compliance year to which the Performance League Table relates. The higher the score the better the ranking in the Performance League Table.

Ensuring shutdown of PCs is still the easiest energy reduction procedure

At Banking Tech.com, there’s an interesting article up about how the “little things add up” when applied to Green IT.  To a few, Green IT still seems like an unobtainable but noteworthy objective, but its really not as hard to obtain as it sounds.  It’s the little things in the organization where you can cobble “wins” together to meet your overall objective.  Green IT need not be a monumental shift and change procedure for most organizations.  It’s really about identifying areas in the organization where efficiency can be improved and then applying Green IT methodologies and techniques to those areas.

As noted in the article, still one of the easiest ways to kick-start a Green IT movement within your organization, and show immediate benefits, is to centrally manage the shutdown of PCs in your company.  It’s a simple concept, and one that 1E knows all to well as the pioneer in the space.  Our NightWatchman Enterprise solution provides for this function, but it also goes much, much further, while still making it simple.

South Africa’s OUTsurance using proven solution to save 146,000 kWh of electricity per year

OUTsurance selects NightWatchman® Enterprise to improve patch management with Wake-on-LAN and power manage its 2,000 PCs

Leading South African short-term insurer improves manageability of PC estate and stands to save 146,000 kWh of electricity per year – the equivalent annual electricity use of 20 homes

Cape Town, 10th November, 2011 - 1E (www.1e.com), the global leader in Efficient IT solutions, today announced that it has been selected by OUTsurance (www.outsurance.co.za), to improve patch management and save energy across its estate of 2,000 desktop PCs. The deployment will be handled by 1E preferred business partner, sustainableIT (www.sustainableit.co.za).

“Our staff would often not reboot their machines. In some cases, machines had not been rebooted for more than 50 days, which was clearly impacting patching and performance. This was when we realized that enough was enough and we needed to do something,” says Simon Faragher, OUTsurance project manager.

“We selected NightWatchman® Enterprise from 1E because we needed a proven solution for reliable patch management. Our number one goal is to keep our PCs healthy and available, while guaranteeing zero user disruption, so it was the obvious choice,” continues Faragher.

WakeUp from 1E is a feature of NightWatchman® Enterprise, which reduces the burden of administrator support while maintaining Computer Health™ to ensure that users always remain productive. It is a Wake-on-LAN solution that enables rapid deployment of patches across a network out-of-hours and automatic routine maintenance and software distribution.
“The C02 savings we stand to make as a result of automatically shutting down our PCs was an additional reason for our purchase decision. We stand to save 145 metric tonnes a year – that’s the equivalent emissions from the average annual electricity use of 20 homes,” concludes Faragher.

Initially, OUTsurance ran a test on 1,678 machines over a period of 20 days. The solution helped the insurer see that 33% of desktops and 3% of monitors were being left on overnight, wasting energy unnecessarily. It also showed that 29% of desktops and 4% of monitors were being left on, but only 11% of PCs are actually used, during the weekend.

Tim James, director at sustainableIT, says: “It’s rewarding to see the deployment of NightWatchman Enterprise help OUTsurance solve its immediate need to improve patch manageability across the organization, save money and positively contribute to its own corporate C02 emissions reductions.”

Got carbon management? Maybe you should rethink that

Heather Clancy of ZDNet reports today…

Pike Research is predicting that the North American market for carbon management software and services will be the world’s largest by 2013, at approximately $1.1 billion. That is roughly 41 percent of the worldwide market for this category. By 2017, the market is expected to reach $5.7 billion, and North America will represent 43 percent of that amount.

Mandatory PC energy standards proposed

The IDG News service is reporting today that New Zealand is starting to get serious about PC energy conservation.

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority has begun the formal process of engaging industry on energy-saving standards for personal computer equipment, with a discussion document that suggests mandatory standards that would shut out computers judged inefficient from being imported into or manufactured in New Zealand.

Gartner's Top 10 IT Challenges and how 1E fits

Posted in several places today, news outlets are promoting Gartner’s recent comments on the top 10 IT challenges for the next cycle of cycles.  It’s always amazing to me how well 1E is positioned to solve a lot of the upcoming challenges for organizations.  It’s great to be visionary!

Immediately, I see 3 different areas where our solutions are already available to meet the challenges that you’ll face.  I’ve outlined them here and also given some links of interest for each one based on how we’ve covered this even recently.

Three : Energy efficiency and monitoring. There’s an emerging market of tools for energy monitoring and efficiency, with more than 25 vendors in this market. These tools monitor consumption at the device level or application level. A savings of just a few percent can make a difference. Gartner estimates that a 25,000 square-foot data center consumes about $4.1 million in energy each year.

Eight : Compute and data center density. Users are trying to increase density in their data centers to avoid the cost of expansion or building a new one. IT managers are, in some cases, upgrading hardware faster to the next server generation, which includes more servers in a single rack, to take advantage of the increase performance at less power while increasing data center density.

Significant energy savings without disrupting the work of frontline staff

The IT department has played a key role in Newham’s efficiency agenda, from greening the data centre and reducing the number of physical servers to reducing both the footprint and energy consumption of the client-side devices.

By implementing NightWatchman, a power management solution from 1E, on our 1,700 PCs we were able to control the amount of time a computer could stand idle, powering them down when they were not being used.

In the first year we saved £18,500, which was more than enough to pay for the project and gave us a return on investment in less than a year. In addition, we were able to show the business that this project had directly contributed to reducing carbon emissions by 143 tonnes, which equates to 264,552 KWh of electricity. This has contributed to us winning the Greenest Hospital award at the Healthcare Excellence and Leadership Awards and being a finalist in the Green IT awards 2011.

We’re now looking to deploy Nightwatchman Server Edition on our servers to measure efficiency and identify how many are not doing anything useful, with a view to decommissioning or repurposing them. It is widely believed that 15% of servers are not doing any useful work, so we expect to see more efficiency savings here.
