British Association of Adoption and Fostering

British Association of Adoption and Fostering

1E has been a committed supporter of BAAF in recent years, supporting both our work finding adoptive families for children in care, but recently also generously supporting our fostering work. Adoption and fostering both have the purpose of providing children in care with safe, stable and secure family lives. Adoption is so important because it provides children with new permanent families for life. Foster care is important in a different way – it is designed to give a child safe family care for a week, a month, a year or the rest of their childhood depending on their needs and circumstances. High quality adoption and fostering services are needed because children who come into care usually have very troubled family backgrounds. Many of the children are traumatised. The majority will have experienced abuse or neglect. These children need consistent and skilled parenting to help them to try and recover from the reasons why they came into care. There are some 84,000 children in care in the UK today and nearly 54,000 of those are living in foster families, so 1E’s support for BAAF’s fostering work is having a significant impact across the UK. 1E also supported BAAF’s ‘Supporting Children’s Learning’ training pack, designed to help foster carers support the education of the children in their care. 1E also supported a new DVD that BAAF made in partnership with the charity Voice, which advocates for children in care. http://www.baaf.org.uk

BAAF Film “Someone to…” is a brief but powerful animated film made with children in foster care today. It tells the stories of two characters created by the children, Tom and Vanessa. Through hearing about Tom and Vanessa’s lives we learn about what makes a good or a bad experience for a child in foster care and we hear what children need most from their foster carers. Haiti Relief Fund Inc.

Haiti Relief Fund

In the US this year, 1E Inc. has made several donations to the Haiti Relief Fund through Doctors Without Borders/ Medicines Sans Frontiers who stated they were incredibly grateful for the generous support from their donors for the emergency in Haiti. MSF has been working in Haiti for 19 years, most recently operating three emergency hospitals in Port-au-Prince and mobilized a large emergency response to this disaster. Their immediate response in the first hours following the disaster in Haiti was only possible because of private unrestricted donations from around the world received before the earthquake struck. Byte Night on behalf of Action for Children

Byte Night on behalf of Action for Children

Byte Night, the annual IT industry sleep out, supports the vital work of Action for Children, helping them support and speak out for vulnerable and neglected children and young people right across the UK.

Each year over 700 IT professionals spend a night experiencing a little of what it might be like to be homeless to raise money to help Action for Children tackle the root causes of youth homelessness. Their support not only helps to keep thousands of young people off the streets but also helps them build better lives with secure accommodation, education and training opportunities.
