On 5th October 2009, President Barack Obama signed Executive Order (EO) 13514, Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance, a broad-based environmental initiative to “establish an integrated strategy towards sustainability in the Federal Government” which requires Federal agencies to lead by example in creating a clean energy economy. EO13514 expands upon energy reduction and environmental performance requirements of Executive Order (EO) 13423, which obliges Federal agencies to purchase environmentally sustainable products and services under the Environmentally Preferable Purchasing program.
