How to manage change in the tech industry

 

Technology is disrupting businesses at an unprecedented rate. Smart organizations understand how advances in technology can provide a real competitive edge. However, while many businesses are benefitting from this digital disruption, the rate and pace of change internally can be bewildering for employees.

When we built out our marketing team, we realized we had a crisis. We weren’t savvy enough to do further outreach. For a business that’s all about innovation and selling products that allow our customers to be fast and effective, that’s what we were looking for. We needed to communicate with our customers in a way that we never had before.

Don’t get caught unprepared. In order to stay on top of trends, remain engaged with your community, and cultivate employees who are capable of adapting, you have to have a plan. Here are a few tips:

Have a clear vision

Selecting the right leaders for change is one of the most critical things you can do. When change does need to happen, make sure you have the right leaders who can build momentum and bring people with them.

Communicate

Don’t be afraid to tell your teams what you are planning to do. Many organizations address change in silos or in isolation of the rest of the business. This can make your team members nervous and question why change is happening. Communicate and involve them early so your employees know where they stand.

Remove obstacles

Be sure to identify obstacles early on and plan ways around these so that nothing derails your change initiatives.

Invest in coaching and mentoring

Changes in organizational structure can be generally straight forward. However, more complex changes to working patterns and job roles can be challenging. Support change initiatives effectively by providing coaching and mentoring to those affected by changes to the way they work. Institute a program, dedicate a day, or plan a company activity. There are lots of low costs options out there which can lead to greater engagement in change and retention of employees.

Embed the change

Close the loop with measurement and short term wins. Weave into the culture and embed the change effectively if it’s going to be sustainable.

Whatever industry you’re in, you will have experienced how technology is changing how we work. More than ever before, employees not only need to be comfortable with change, they also need to embrace change if they are going to remain competitive at work. Keep your employees educated and they will stay inspired and productive.
