Consider that the average enterprise will rebuild 20% of their machines annually – all the challenges you face with your initial migration will occur for each of these rebuilds. Consider also that the average enterprise will also replace 20% of their estate annually – as you grow and as hardware gets older. All the migration challenges occur in this case too.
However, if you implement a fully automated process you can use that same process to provision new computers. New computers can be shipped directly to your users from the supplier. There is no need to have the image pre-installed by your vendor (which costs money and often results in out-of-date builds being delivered).
Similarly, you can use your automated migration process every time you need to refresh or replace a device. You get the same benefits as with the new computer – lower shipping costs, lower vendor charges, the latest image installed – and the replacement device is ready for the user, with all their data and all their applications in place.
Service at a price
A big cause for concern among organizations preparing to migrate to Windows 10 is the new Windows servicing model. Migrating to Windows 10 is like boarding a train that is moving somewhat faster than you might have previously been comfortable with.
Service Updates will now be released each month and Feature Upgrades two to three times per year. Those Service Updates are already in the region of 500MB and are cumulative, so will continue to grow over time. Each Feature Upgrade is effectively a complete upgrade of the OS so will be in the region of 3GB.
Config Manager doesn’t support the delivery optimization of all these updates, so you could be faced with your network grinding to a halt each month as these updates arrive.
