Our History
1E was formed back in 1997 by Sumir Karayi, Mark Blackburn and Phil Wilcock who got together whilst working at Microsoft.
Highly technical and with many years of experience with blue chip organizations, they saw a need to reduce the cost of managing
Windows PCs and Servers. Starting with £1500 capital, 1E was built upon a strong belief in technical excellence and team spirit,
a tradition that successfully continues today.
Our early projects proved to be very successful. NPI, for instance, reported a 5-fold saving in the cost of running Windows PCs
with the RTM version of Microsoft SMS 2.0. Through word of mouth and sheer hard work, 1E gained a reputation as the leading Microsoft Systems Management specialist.
Our first software solutions automated waking-up PCs for patching and saving energy when they were not being used. We were pioneers in
PC Power Management and Green IT even though the environment was not a hot topic in those days. We knew we were doing the right thing in
helping companies reduce their waste at the same time as saving them money. Since then we have added further solutions that are focused on cost savings;
solutions that reduce branch office based servers, reduce helpdesk calls through automation and reduce software licence waste.
Our first conference was back in 2000 at what is now the Microsoft Management Summit and it was a lot of fun.
We realized how important it was to get to know our customers and the community and for them to feel part of our
extended 1E family.
We hosted our first 1E party to say “thank you” to our supporters and have continued this tradition ever since.
Now more than 10 years later, Sumir remains at the helm as CEO with Mark and Phil still actively involved.
Our solutions are market leading and we continue to help our customers save significant amounts of money every day.
Where did the name come from?
People often ask us where the name came from ... and there have been many suggestions put forward over the years. No, 1E does not stand for One Earth,
though we have a strong belief in Social Responsibility. The definitive origin of the name is from a BSOD Windows error
“STOP 0x0000001E KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT HANDLED”. Back in the early days, this was the favourite error code of the founders,
one which they helped clients avoid.
