A Letter from Sumir Karayi, CEO, 1E
I founded 1E over 11 years ago with clear goals in mind - I wanted to help customers cut their IT operating costs and to
reduce their environmental footprint. A staggering 4% of the total US power demand comes from IT and now, 1E has solutions
which improve the efficiency of two thirds of this – our solutions identify and save the wasted energy and resources required
to run PCs and servers which are not being used productively.
1E pioneered PC power management launching our first solution over 9 years ago. Today we remain the market leader
with over 4 million seats deployed worldwide. Since its launch, NightWatchman has saved organizations over USD $360 million
in energy costs which equates to a reduction in CO2 emissions of 2.7 million metric tonnes.
But it’s not just PCs that are wasting power, servers and data centers are too. Between 2000 and 2006, U.S. data centers
doubled their energy consumption. With the trend towards internet based services and cloud computing, server numbers and their
electricity use will continue to increase. Which is why earlier this year, we launched NightWatchman Server Edition and will
continue to research and innovate into all areas of IT power demand.
In 2009, in partnership with the Alliance to Save Energy, we commissioned independent research into the awareness and behavior
of server administrators in the world’s largest companies. From this survey we uncovered that almost two thirds of respondents
believed that at least 15% of the servers that they managed were powered on 24/7, but were not doing anything useful. The potential
global savings from identifying and removing this waste adds up to USD $24.7 billion every year in hardware, maintenance, management
and energy savings.
“... if all the world’s 1 billion PC’s were powered down for just one night – it would save enough energy to
light up New York City’s Empire State Building – inside and out – for more than 30 years”
Given the economic and environmental issues we face today, there has never been a greater need for efficiency in IT.
I strongly encourage you to download the reports for both Server and PCs from the links on this page. If you would like
to understand how 1E can help you reduce the costs and carbon footprint within your organization, please come and talk to us.
Best wishes for 2010 from everyone at 1E.
Warm regards,
Sumir
