Empowering Efficient IT
Globally over the past five years $8 trillion has been spent on IT, which is more than half the annual US GDP. Maintaining this huge amount of IT accounts for 70-80 percent of each year’s IT budget. CIOs want to reduce this figure to save money or to have more discretionary spend, but lack the tools to do so.

History
1E was formed back in 1997 by Sumir Karayi, Mark Blackburn and Phil Wilcock who got together whilst working at Microsoft. Highly technical and with many years of experience with blue chip organizations, they saw a need to reduce the cost of managing Windows PCs and Servers. Starting with £1500 capital, 1E was built upon a strong belief in technical excellence and team spirit, a tradition that successfully continues today.
Our early projects proved to be very successful. NPI, for instance, reported a 5-fold saving in the cost of running Windows PCs with the RTM version of Microsoft SMS 2.0. Through word of mouth and sheer hard work, 1E gained a reputation as the leading Microsoft Systems Management specialist.
Our first software solutions automated waking-up PCs for patching and saving energy when they were not being used. We were pioneers in PC Power Management and Green IT even though the environment was not a hot topic in those days. We knew we were doing the right thing in helping companies reduce their waste at the same time as saving them money. Since then we have added further solutions that are focused on cost savings; solutions that reduce branch office based servers, reduce helpdesk calls through automation and reduce software licence waste.
Our first conference was back in 2000 at what is now the Microsoft Management Summit and it was a lot of fun. We realized how important it was to get to know our customers and the community and for them to feel part of our extended 1E family. We hosted our first 1E party to say “thank you” to our supporters and have continued this tradition ever since.
Now more than 10 years later, Sumir remains at the helm as CEO with Mark and Phil still actively involved. Our solutions are market leading and we continue to help our customers save significant amounts of money every day.
People often ask us where the name came from … and there have been many suggestions put forward over the years. No, 1E does not stand for One Earth, though we have a strong belief in Social Responsibility. The definitive origin of the name is from a BSOD Windows error “STOP 0x0000001E KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT HANDLED”. Back in the early days, this was the favourite error code of the founders, one which they helped clients avoid.
Charity Work
1E is a committed supporter of BAAF supporting their work finding adoptive families for children in care and supporting their fostering work. Both provide children in care with safe, stable, and secure family lives. High quality adoption and fostering services are needed because children who come into care usually have very troubled family backgrounds, many of them are traumatised. These children need consistent and skilled parenting to help them to try and recover from the reasons why they came into care. As of March 2012, there are some 91,500 children in care in the UK today and 75% of these are living in foster families, so 1E’s support for BAAF’s fostering work is having a significant impact across the UK.
1E hosts regular charity events in aid of BAAF, bringing together all our employees to enjoy an evening of fun for a great cause. These include themed events such as Summer Mini Olympics and a Halloween Hat Day and more local events like pub quizzes and bake-offs.
1E will also be running its first ever charity ball in the summer of 2013 where it will host a dinner and dance with exciting entertainment, an auction to raise lots of money and, BAAF, along with parents who have adopted will tell of their personal stories.
On January 24, the second BAAF Fire Walk will take place at Spitafields Market and 1E’s Steve Coates will be walking the hot coals to raise lots of money for this worthy cause. Last year, £6,500 was raised and BAAF hope to beat it this year! Please donate to BAAF and sponsor Steve here. If you are feeling brave enough and want to take part yourself, you need to raise £150 and pay the £10 registration fee. For more information and to sign up, please click here.
BAAF Film “Someone to…” is a brief but powerful animated film made with children in foster care today. It tells the stories of two characters created by the children, Tom and Vanessa. Through hearing about Tom and Vanessa’s lives we learn about what makes a good or a bad experience for a child in foster care and we hear what children need most from their foster carers.
1E has also supported BAAF’s ‘Supporting Children’s Learning’ training pack, designed to help foster carers support the education of the children in their care.
The Manav Mandir Ashram Orphanage in India provides a home for destitute children. It is located at Roop Vihar, near Ashram Chowk, New Delhi. The gurukul was started on Mahavir Jayanti Day in 1993 in the temple building. 1E has been associated with the Ashram for the past 5 years.
1E has taken on the responsibility of educating 23 children at the orphanage by sending them to private school. The children are performing well and we hope to see them through college in the coming years. http://www.manavmandir.com
Masoom Duniya is a school for physically and mentally challenged children run by the Innocent World Charitable Society. It takes special care of children suffering from Down’s syndrome.
The school was founded in December 2004 in Dwarka by Mr. Nayal. The school is run from Mr. Nayal’s house who is extremely dedicated to serving the children. The 33 students attending the school suffer from a range of problems. 1E pays the salaries for a speech therapist and a psychologist to come in and train the children. A special educator is also employed to manage the program with the aim of teaching the students the different life skills required in their everyday lives.
1E has been actively involved in sponsoring the education of children from the under-privileged classes. We provide funding for children to be sent to reputable schools, along with their tuition fees, uniforms, books and extracurricular requirements. We are currently sponsoring children from the Khaitan Public School and Maharishi Vidya Mandir school in Noida and St Clares Convent in Mussoorie.
Charity News
A BUSINESSMAN has raised £3,600 to help children in care find a loving home and hopes to raise even more when he takes part in Sunday’s London Marathon
Sumir Karayi CEO of software company 1E in Uxbridge Road, Ealing, is raising the cash for the British Association of Adoption and Fostering.
He said: “I want to contribute to helping disadvantaged children to a more stable and better future.
“I want to affect the negative statistics where only two per cent of children in state care go on to further education versus 50 per cent of kids that are in a family.
A disproportionate number of those in state care end up in prison so it seemed best if we can contribute to get children out of state care.”
In the past 12 months 1E has raised £12,000 for the charity with regular bake-offs, quizzes and other events.
Sumir started a running club for 1E employees about a year ago and runs with the Ealing Eagles.
It will be his first marathon.
He said: “The only long distance I’ve run is the Ealing Half Marathon last year, which I loved.
“My goal on Sunday is to finish the course and enjoy the run and feel privileged to raise so much money for the charity.”
Brought up in India, Sumir has lived in Ealing for more than 20 years with his German wife and 14-year-old son.

In March 2013, we were proud to achieve a two star accreditation from the Best Companies Guide and a coveted position in The Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies to Work For, where 1E finished third place for positivity, with 91 percent of employees singling this out as one of the company’s key attributes. 1E also ranked fifth for making a positive difference to the world, with 86 percent.
Eighty nine percent of employees believe the company has a strong social conscience and 72 percent agree that it encourages support for the community. Charity work is also part of the company’s culture at 1E with 98 percent of employees stating they are encouraged to participate in charitable activities. Indeed, staff are allowed to take five days of company time for voluntary projects, while the UK team has held fundraising events to support the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF). The New York team has also donated toys and treats to children affected by Hurricane Sandy.

On January 24, the second British Association For Adoption And Fostering (BAAF) fire walk took place at Spitafields Market and 1E’s Steve Coates was walking the hot coals to raise lots of money for this worthy cause.
Last year, £6,500 was raised and BAAF hope to beat it this year.
Not only did he brave the hot fire laden path three times, Steve had put in a massive fundraising effort beforehand and it proved to have paid off as he and the other firewalkers managed to raise £8,500 – that’s £2,000 more than the previous year.
Thanks again to Steve for his time and efforts and thank you all for your support and generous donations that will go to help children find a home they need and truly deserve. Want to see steve in action? Check out this short video clip he had uploaded on to youtube.

Hurricane Sandy left a path of devastation as it travelled up the East Coast at the end of October 2012. In the short span of three days, lives were irrevocably changed as power, homes, and loved ones were lost to the power of the storm. Here at 1E, we counted ourselves immensely lucky when all of our employees checked in as safe, having weathered the storm with homes and families intact. All any of us had to do was to turn on the news to realize just how fortunate we were… and we knew we had to give back – as individuals, and as a company.
In the offices, we refer to this phenomenon as “1E Sunshine” – a deeply ingrained desire in each of us to make life easier for those around us. Professionally, it refers to the way we genuinely want to help customers in their endeavors. But 1E sunshine goes deeper than business cases; it is part of the company DNA and is a driving force in everything we do.
In an effort to help as an organization – in addition to the work that employees were doing on an individual level – Erica Allen, EA to the President, and Lauren Bermudez, Office Administrator, made countless calls to shelters, schools and charities following the storm. Perhaps fortunately for those organizations, many were already overwhelmed by the outpouring of goodwill they had already received and were recommending that donations be sent elsewhere.
One such organization, After Sandy, told 1E about the plight of The Petrides School on Staten Island. Four hundred students from neighboring schools had been displaced by the storm; many had lost their homes and some were removed from their family setting, placed in the homes of good samaritans they did not necessarily know. Once contacted by 1E, the principal relayed a story of giving an iPod to a student who had lost everything and the immeasurable gratitude that the child expressed at the idea of having one thing as his very own again. As a technology company this struck a chord with us and we immediately responded with an offer to gift the other displaced students who lost everything at PS 53 with something of their own again.
On November 14, 2012 members of 1E staff stepped away from their desks to help rebuild the feeling of security and safety these children once had that was swept away in the storm. They brought with them technology items to replace those lost by the displaced students – Nintendo DSi consoles for the younger children and iPod touches for the older. Our NY-based IT team was on hand all day to help set up the new presents and also do whatever they could to help get the school’s computer systems back up and running. Other members of staff lent a helping hand wherever it was needed – in the cafeteria, the classroom, or the main office.
Our efforts at The Petrides school were documented by staff photos, stories, and – as a last minute surprise – The Making a Difference of the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams.
We are honored to have been able to lift the spirits of the children at the Petrides school in some small way and plan to continue our partnership moving forward in an effort to help them rebuild their schools and their lives.
