Extended support contract for Windows XP on 1E products throughout 2014


Hello there,
As I’m sure you know today marks the end of Microsoft’s extended support for Windows XP. While the majority of our customers have taken advantage of our windows migration technologies, we acknowledge there will be pockets of legacy systems out there. This may be for a variety of reasons such as legacy applications or regulatory compliance issues, etc. Over the last few weeks, we’ve had a couple of people reach out to us to ask for advice on 1E product & Windows XP support.
Today I’m announcing that we’ve decided to offer an extended support contract for Windows XP on 1E products throughout 2014. The really good news is that we’re going to be offering this free of charge to any customer that wants to take advantage of this extension. Will new products / new product version support Windows XP?
As a general rule, no. However there may be some exceptions (such as if we write a tool for helping migrate off XP!).
Why not just support XP forever?
Every release of software we do has to be fully tested on every version of every OS that we support. This has a couple of issues for us: Firstly it adds delay to bringing software to market and secondly it makes it harder for our developers to write the software (as APIs may have changed between windows version, meaning that they have to solve problems multiple times), adding complexity and further delay.
If [insert 1E product name] worked with XP yesterday, wouldn’t it just continue to work today?
Probably, yes. However given that Microsoft are no longer fixing issues with the underlying platform, should one arise, we may find it difficult to support it in the longer term.
Are there any exclusions?
Yes there are a few – basically because it’s hard to provide support for a platform that is unsupported:

  • If the issue is relating to an underlying XP issue that has not been fixed or we cannot get support on, we may be unable to resolve it.
  • If there’s a work around available we may have to point you at that instead

Ultimately it comes down to: We will make reasonable endeavours to diagnose and resolve the issue
