In the first of the three-part webinar series on Windows 10 deployment, 1E experts Troy Martin and Jim Bezdan reviewed the high-level issues surrounding rapid migration to the new OS.
The second part looked into the update process in more detail. It started by examining the importance of peer-to-peer (P2P) content distribution.
P2P has many benefits including, resiliency, remote location support, as well as your ability to collapse configuration manager server hierarchy.
Although Configuration Manager has been adding P2P capabilities, there are still a number of gaps, particularly when considering OS deployment. 39% of attendees said they weren’t using any P2P solution so there’s still a large community that isn’t yet reaping the benefits.
The webinar was very demo-heavy with Jim and Troy demonstrating how end-users can schedule their own updates so that their work isn’t interrupted. They also showed how it’s possible to review actual application usage and define policies to refresh or replace applications as part of the OSD process.
The key message from all this is the need for zero-touch automation for Windows 10 upgrades. Anything else involves expensive and slow manual intervention. It’s been estimated that corporate migrations might take 2 years to complete which is an age for modern IT and leads to increased support burdens and security vulnerabilities.
That automation is made possible by extending Configuration Manager task sequences and an automation environment that includes automating the complex process of converting existing systems from BIOS to UEFI – a critical step required to enable Windows 10 advanced security features. This whole process was described and demoed in detail.
The third part of this series will take a look at what happens after you’ve migrated as you will have to manage all the new Window releases and provisioning new hardware as it arrives.
