A new pan-government deal for IT power management solutions, with the Office for Government Commerce (OGC) led by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), has been awarded to the NightWatchman software product from 1E to enable the automatic shut down of PCs during nonworking hours to reduce energy wastage
London, UK – May 28, 2008 – The UK Government’s central procurement department, the Office for Government Commerce (OGC), has selected the NightWatchman PC power management solution from 1E as part of its campaign to encourage the public sector to work smarter for the environment when using PCs. The campaign also ties into the Cabinet Office agenda for “greening” government IT. This pangovernment framework will assist the switchingoff of PCs when not in use and could save up to £10.2 million and carbon emission reductions of up to 55,723 tonnes per year.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), in collaboration with the OGC’s ICT, Energy and Sustainability category teams, have awarded a new pangovernment IT power management framework to 1E. This deal is available for all software products within the 1E portfolio, including NightWatchman. The framework will provide easy access and contractual agreement for projects, and is open to all public sector bodies from 1 May 2008 for a period of four years.
The OGC is an office of HM Treasury, responsible for improving value for money by driving up standards and capability in procurement. The OGC will now work closely with 1E, the specialist provider of PC power management software for Microsoft Windows environments, to ensure maximum costsavings, energy efficiencies and carbon footprint reductions across the UK Government’s ICT systems.

In a recent study conducted with the National Energy Foundation (NEF), 1E found that shutting down unused PCs across the UK could potentially prevent the release of 700,000 tonnes of unnecessary CO2 emissions per annum.
