LONDON, UK, OCTOBER 26, 2007 – 1E, a leading provider of software products and professional services for Windows Management, today announced the release of its NightWatchman® 5.0 PC power management software. By centralizing and automating PC shutdown processes, NightWatchman enables businesses to save energy consumed by idle workstations and report accurate savings data to internal constituents and shareholders.

“Reducing carbon emissions has become a C‐level imperative, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Companies can realize dramatic reductions in just three months by using 1E’s software to automate PC shutdown,” said Sumir Karayi, CEO of 1E. “Eight years after its original release, the fifth generation of NightWatchman has been refined, based on customer feedback to include stronger reporting of power & cost savings and further optimize the power management features of Windows® Vista™.”

For the IT or facilities manager, NightWatchman from 1E addresses the challenge of shutting down PCs in a large network where users require different settings for working and out‐of‐office hours. The solution offers easy installation, simple scheduling processes for daily, immediate or one‐off shutdowns. The software solution enables IT administrators to push critical patches and updates as and when required, guaranteeing 100% patch management success and minimizing the window for virus infiltration. For the individual employee, the solution protects unsaved user data prior to shutdown and allows the user to defer shutdown if required. For the C‐level executive, the product reduces bottom‐line energy costs, saves energy and reduces CO2 emissions.

NightWatchman saves an average of $50 / £43 per PC per year with a typical ROI of less than three months.

New features of NightWatchman 5.0 include:

  • Enhanced reporting: provides greater flexibility and visibility on network power consumption and high‐speed reporting of achieved energy savings
  • Power options compliance reporting: reports on power options settings for each PC across the network, enabling continuous monitoring of performance against energy saving policies
  • Enhanced scripting: allows more control over application windows ‐ as the machine shuts down to deal with issues in a more generic fashion
  • Enhanced graphing engine: supports 24 new chart types with 3D graphics and single button‐click for printing and exporting reports to PDF or Excel files

Research conducted by 1E shows that an average‐sized US customer with 10,000 PCs can prevent 1,381 tons of CO2 emissions annually using NightWatchman. If all companies across the US used NightWatchman with their Windows systems, they would prevent 14.4 million tons of CO2 from reaching the atmosphere – the equivalent of taking all the cars in the state of Maryland off the road.i

NightWatchman is available as a stand‐alone tool or packaged with 1E WakeUp™ as part of 1E’s Power & Patch Management Pack. 1E WakeUp is a Wake‐On‐LAN product that automatically turns on computers for software and patch updates with Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS)/System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), increasing delivery success to 100%.
