US Federal Agency deploys PC Power Management software from 1E
London & New York 18 March 2009 – 1E, a leading provider of Windows management software and services designed to reduce costs within the business environment, today announces that the US Department of Veterans Affairs has licensed PC Power Management software from 1E. The Department is currently deploying 220,000 seats of the Power and Patch Management Pack as part of its major Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager rollout. The deal will ensure costs savings throughout the organization and will also mean that the Department will be able to enjoy a reduction in its carbon footprint.
The Power and Patch Management Pack from 1E consists of two parts, 1E NightWatchman and 1E WakeUp. Already installed across three million PCs globally, NightWatchman enhances the power management capabilities of a customer’s computer by providing graceful shutdowns with the ability to save opened files; and combines this with an effective scheduling system in a single, easy-to-use package. 1E WakeUp ensures that all PCs targeted for software and patch distributions are turned on and ready to receive them, reducing the chance that a PC will miss a vital patch. In addition, built-in Computer Health functionality periodically runs tests and applies fixes designed to improve availability, reliability and performance.
The deployment of NightWatchman is a significant tool in VA’s overall power management solution. It will help VA to implement the Executive Order 13423 electronics stewardship power management goal for computers and monitors and provide a mechanism to track progress. It will also help VA achieve the energy efficiency requirements set in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) was established in 1989, succeeding the Veterans Administration and is responsible for providing federal benefits to veterans and their families. Headed by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, VA is the secondlargest of the 15 Cabinet departments and operates nationwide programs for health care, financial assistance and burial benefits.
NightWatchman 5.5 now provides an additional level of functionality to the IT administrator through the introduction of the NightWatchman Console and Sleepless Client Detection. The NightWatchman Console makes PC Power Management even easier, enabling administrators to centrally control PCs under their remit without requiring existing Systems Management in place. Sleepless Client Detection (SCD) addresses the problem of machines not going to sleep when expected. SCD enables NightWatchman to understand and recognize many of the common reasons why PCs are prevented from entering low power states and overrides these measures to ensure that every machine goes to sleep when it should.
