Kiwibank stands to save up to NZ$24,570 in energy costs, reduce energy use by 163,800 kWh and reduce CO2 emissions by 32 tonnes in the first year
Wellington, New Zealand – 16 June, 2011 -1E, the global leader in IT efficiency software and Transend Ltd., its preferred partner for New Zealand and Green IT specialist, today announced that Kiwibank has deployed NightWatchman and WakeUp from 1E.
Basic energy meters were predicting that approximately 50% of computers were being left on at nights and weekends at the New Zealand bank. The challenge was to find a secure, proven solution that would reduce unnecessary energy use and costs, without disrupting users.
“Before committing to the project we researched how we could make the greatest cost and energy savings through our PCs. NightWatchman and WakeUp have exceeded our expectations and we have had not a single complaint from users. The implementation and company-wide deployment was a success,” says Esme Petelo, Kiwibank Information Technology.
NightWatchman integrated seamlessly with Kiwibank’s existing Microsoft Configuration Manager platform and collected data over a four week period, in order to benchmark PC energy consumption. The weekday behaviour report showed that 52% of PCs were left on overnight. On weekends, 50% of PCs were left on – with only 9% actually being used.
Kiwibank applied for an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) technology grant. The EECA commissioned a third-party verification of the projected energy, cost and CO2 emissions savings. The independent verification confirmed that at an average of 15 cents per kWh, Kiwibank would be saving approximately NZ $27.32 per computer per year.
“If all of the top 100 largest IT users in New Zealand were to use automated PC energy management software like NightWatchman from 1E across approximately 280,000 PCs, they would see a collective reduction in energy use of 51 GWh and savings of up to NZ$8 million per year in electricity costs; the equivalent of taking 3,000 cars off the roads, not to mention the positive contribution towards our national 50 by 50 carbon emissions reductions pledge,” says Matt Johnson, Managing Director, Transend Limited.
