What is bimodal IT?

What is bimodal IT?

What remains after you are current?

Experts are agreed; patching your software and keeping it up-to-date is the single most important thing that every single organization must do if they want to have a fighting chance of combating cyber criminals. In the case of WannaCry 2, organizations who had deployed the Microsoft patch MS17-010 were immune to this strain of ransomware. Why then, did so many organizations fall victim to this almost childish piece of poorly written code?
It might seem obvious now, but the reason why is not that they can’t patch their systems, but that they can’t do it efficiently or efficiently enough to make it a simple, automated task that always gets done when critical updates are made available by software vendors.  These IT teams are constantly fighting against the tide to deliver more value to the business with even more complex IT infrastructures and a diverse and growing software portfolio. On top of that, IT teams are often left juggling multiple critical priorities without the right level of investment in solutions that can automate the more mundane tasks that are, in many cases, just needed to keep the lights on.  Why is that?
In most organizations today, the main tools used to patch software date back over two decades. And while these tools do a very good job at managing complex and repetitive tasks, they were not designed to help you act fast.  Requests for IT to respond faster occur every single day in every single organization.  But how can you respond to an urgent request when the tools you are using take 3 days to give you an answer?
Gartner has a term for describing the ideal solution and they call it, “bimodal IT”. In bimodal IT, organizations combine the best of both worlds. (They define it as, “a bimodal capability is the marriage of two distinct, but coherent approaches to creating and delivering business change.”) Complex and repetitive tasks are managed by the tools that are best suited to providing consistency at scale.  The need for a quicker response to urgent demands are then handled by solutions that can get fast and accurate results whenever they are required. This then describes the blueprint for an IT infrastructure best suited to the era of digital transformation.
